Got a question?
We’ve got the answers...

Is a Solar Thermal system suitable for my home?

Our Solar Thermal systems are for residential properties only. For optimum performance your home needs a sloping roof that faces south. If your roof faces any other direction it may still be possible for you to have Solar Thermal fitted, but one of our Home Energy Consultant’s can check this during the survey. Your roof should also be free from shadows and obstructions. To find out if your home is suitable, call us today on 0800 072 7604.

How much hot water will a Solar Thermal system provide?

On average, it will provide between 50% and 60% of your annual hot water needs, based on your home’s size. In the summer, your system may generate up to 100% of your hot water needs. In the winter or during dull weather, it will generate less hot water and during this time you will need to rely on your existing hot water system and the fuel that powers this system.

Do I need planning permission?

Not usually, unless your home is a listed building, in a conservation area or an area of outstanding natural beauty.  To be sure, please check with your local planning authority.

How will the panels affect my home’s appearance?

Our panels do not protrude a great deal and we think they will barely affect the appearance of your home.

How do I maintain my panels?

There’s very little maintenance involved. The manufacturer, Vaillant just recommends that you arrange a panel check and clean once a year. npower hometeam can arrange for this to take place at the same time as your annual boiler service.

Are my panels covered by a warranty?

Yes they are. Your panels are covered by a Vaillant manufacturer’s warranty of 10 years. The shell of the solar cylinder is also covered by the manufacturer for 25 years.

Will I need a new hot water system?

It depends on the age and condition of your existing hot water system. Our Home Energy Consultant will advise you on this when they design your Solar Thermal system.

How long will it take to install my system?

Usually five working days. On the first two days, Ploughcroft will install the panels on your roof. Our npower hometeam installers will then fit your boiler and solar cylinder. If you don't need a new boiler, your system will take less time to install.
